The announcement was made on the official X account of xAI, but there is also a catch. Each user will be able to access the platform freely with a small number of queries per day. To use it further, users will need a premium membership of Grok.
Key Features of Grok 4
Those who are about to utilize this opportunity of free access must be aware of the features of Grok 4. It has two operating modes: one is Auto Mode, which decides automatically if a query needs more detailed reasoning and aims to deliver faster responses while using fewer resources.
Another mode is Expert Mode, which allows users to switch the AI manually into the reasoning mode if they want more detailed and researched responses. Both modes will give users a more robust experience and better control over the responses generated.
Additional features like Grok 4 Heavy, which is claimed to be the most efficient model, remains restricted to the subscribers of SuperGrok Heavy. Paid members will be able to access higher request limits.
Launch of Grok Imagine
Parallel to the announcement of free access, xAI has also launched Grok Imagine, an AI image and video generation tool available for free to users worldwide.
Grok Interface to Soon Add Ads
With all the announcements and launches, Elon Musk, in his recent X Spaces, said that the Grok interface will soon have ads. These ads will appear between the answers and suggestions on the Grok website as well as mobile apps. Musk claimed that this integration of ads was necessary to balance the high cost of GPUs that power the large AI models.
The decision of making access to Grok 4 free even for a limited time period seems like a well-planned move to increase the completion, specifically to challenge the potential of OpenAI’s latest model GPT 5, which is also free for users. But how this move will boost the users to stick to Grok with limited access and premium models still unlocked is in question.
