Add Background Image in Google Docs Using the Watermark Workaround
Since there is no direct way to add an image as a background in Google Docs, the next best thing is to use the watermark workaround. It works like a charm, and it is 100% free to do, so you won’t have to worry about paying a dime for it.
Google Docs treats watermarks as faint images or text that appear behind the main content of your document. By using a watermark and adjusting its properties, we can effectively create a background image.
Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Open your Google Doc and navigate to the Insert menu. From the dropdown options, select Watermark. This will open a sidebar on the right side of your screen.
Step 2: Select the background image that you wish to use in the background of the Google doc.
Step 3: In the watermark formatting options, enter ‘300%‘ in the scale field. This will automatically spread the image across the document, saving your time from manually dragging it to fit the page.
Note
If you’re seeing the white background behind the text, like in the image above, select all the text and then choose ‘None’ in the Highlight color in the Google Docs toolbar.
Want to add more pages with the same background?
Go to the Insert menu > Break > Page break OR use the below keyboard shortcuts to add a page break quickly.
Ctrl + Enter (for Windows) or Command+Enter (for macOS)
Although there aren’t direct ways to apply an image to the background of your Google Doc, there is always a workaround that simplifies the work for you. We have explained everything related to adding an image as a background in the Google Docs and put it behind the text.
