What is Google Play System Update?

Google Play System Update is also known as Google System Updates. It brings new features to make your Android devices more reliable and secure. Google provides these updates to the Android OS, Google Play Services, and Google Play Store.

Google System Updates = Google Play System Update =  Project Mainline

Google Play System Updates also known as Project Mainline were introduced in Android 10. All Android 10 and newer devices receive Google Play System updates from time to time. This includes Android tablets and smartphones, Android TV, Wear OS devices, Chrome OS devices, and Android auto-enabled vehicles. These updates are sent out by Google itself.

Google Play System updates mainly to address security issues. However, they are not the same as the monthly Android security patches. These updates help fix bugs and make other necessary improvements in Android 10 and higher devices.

In recent years, Google has improved and made the updating part of the Android OS easier. Instead of having middlemen, they are focusing on reaching the updates directly to users.

These updates are automatically downloaded and installed by Google Play Store. The installation is finalized when you reboot your device. Google’s goal is to make the system invisible.

Google System Updates improves an array of services on your Android device. It can automatically update your device with bug and security fixes.

Why Google Play System Update is Important?

Google does an excellent job at patching vulnerabilities and fixing bugs. It sends the code to device manufacturers to patch their Android devices. But due to full support from OEMs, millions of devices go without any updates and stay vulnerable to attacks.

Instead of relying on OEMs, Google wants to gain full control over the security aspect of Android devices. By doing so, it wants to release critical bug fixes and improvements. This is where Google Play System Updates (Google System Updates) come into the scene.

They introduced Google Play System Updates with Android 10 and with Android 11 Google has added 12 more Mainline Modules and all of them must be implemented by OEMs.

Google System Updates improve services like:

Security & Privacy: This helps secure your device and include new privacy features, so you can choose what data you share with apps on your device.

Account Management: It enables you to log into your Google account and manage the settings.

Safety and Emergency: This ensures that you receive timely alerts for both emergency and non-emergency things.

Games: It allows achievements, automatic sign-in, and leader boards in game apps.

Wallet: It supports important digital wallet features such as digital passes, in-app purchases, and contactless payments.

Location Services: It helps improve accuracy and allow services and apps on your device to use your location.

Utilities: It includes important features such as contact syncing, data backup, restores, and auto-filling content.

Support: It gives you access to Google Help and also helps you to set up your data plans, device, and more.

Device Connections: It allows you to manage other devices that are connected to your device. It also ensures a consistent connectivity experience across Android devices such as WiFi.

Developer Services: It enables Google as well as third-party developers to develop, design and distribute apps that are secure and performant.

Hopefully, now the concept of Google Play Updates is clear to you. You can learn more about Google System Updates on Google’s Official Documentation.

Google Play System Update FAQs

Below are a few useful FAQs about Google Play System Updates like what to do if you’re stuck on an old version, should you sideload GPSU (Google Play System Update) or not and how to update manually.

How to Update Google Play System Manually?

Go to Settings > Security > Security status > tap on Google Play system update > Check for update

Normally, Google Play System Update runs automatically in the background and when it’s ready to install, you’ll be asked to reboot your device. In case, it’s not updated automatically, you can also check for updates manually using above simple steps.

If there’s a new version available for your device, it will show you the download button. Then follow on-screen instructions to install the update.

Should I sideload or use an APK to install Google Play System Update?

No. If you’re wondering whether it is safe to sideload Google Play System updates or use an APK to get the latest update then our answer is NO.

We strongly recommend you to stay away from sideloading or using APK to get the latest Google Play System Update. Using this method may make your device vulnerable to security breaches or maybe impacted by malware or viruses by injecting malicious files.

Also, chances that after sideloading you may not be able to reverse the update or your device may not get future Google System Updates via OTA.

We suggest you not to use this method to update Google Play System.

What to do if the Google Play system is not updating or stuck on an old version?

As we’ve verified on a Pixel 6 phone, the latest Google Play System Update is April 1, 2022. But availability of the update depends on your Android Device. It may not be the same on your device.

We’re getting a few reports from our readers who are stuck on an old version of Google Play System Update (like August 2021 or any other) or it’s not updating on their Android device.

Below are a few workarounds you can try on your Android device. They are safe and do not involve installing any third party tools.

1. Make sure Google Play Store is up-to-date. To update open Google Play Store > tap profile icon on to-right corner > Settings > About > tap Play Store version. If there is an update available, you’ll see the message ‘a new version will be downloaded and installed’. It will take a few minutes and then check again whether it’s successfully updated or not. You’ll see the message ‘’Google Play Store is up to date’ once it’s updated.

2. Make sure Google Play Services is up-to-date. To check whether Google Play Services is up-to-date or not, click here to open Google Play Services in Play Store or you can search ‘Google Play Services’ in Google app. There you’ll see Google Play Services with Install. Click on it and you’ll be landed in Google Play Store.

If there’s an update available, you’ll see an Update button. If not, you’ll see the Uninstall button only. It means it’s already up-to-date.

After performing above two steps, check for updates for Google Play System manually. If it’s not working then proceed with the below further steps.

4. Caution: Clear the app data for Google Play Store and Google Play Services. You’ll find such an option for each app in the apps list in Settings. Be careful with this option because clearing app data will delete files, settings and databases for that app. Of course, you can configure them again.

5. Reboot your device in Safe Mode and check for updates. To reboot an Android device in Safe Mode:

Press and hold the power button until you see power menu.
Tap and hold Power off until you see a message about Reboot to safe mode.
Then tap OK.

After restarting your Android device into safe mode, check for updates manually (Settings > Security > Security status > Google Play system update).

Hope using above workarounds you’ll be able to get the latest Google Play System Update on your Android device. After performing above all steps, if you’re still not getting the latest update, it is most likely that the update is still not available for your device.

We suggest you first check out what version is available particularly for your device (asking the person having the same device) or contact your device manufacturer.

We’ll update here every time the new Google Play System Update is rolled out.

Bookmark (tap ⭐ or Ctrl + D) or add this page to your collection so that you can access it quickly.

Feel free to share your device’s version information along with the model name, in the comments below.

@Mak007_TH -Thanks for this info. I see some comments that the Google main components downloaded from APKMirror just updates the Google Play System last update date on your phone and does not actually install a Play System update.

I have three Alcatel 1B 2020 32GB phones. One has updated to August 1 2021 update, the other 2 are still on June the 1st 2021 update. Any idea why? When I check for update it says both phones are up to date.

Google Play System update. The Security update on all three phones is still on the 5th of March update. All three phones have the same specs except for the Google Play system update being the 1st of August on one of them and the 1st of June on the other two.
